Classic Patty Melt
A cross between a burger and a grilled cheese sandwich. Served on rye bread with caramelized onions and Swiss cheese, cooked in plenty of butter for a golden crust.
Ingredients
Onions
Patties
Sandwich
Instructions
In a large skillet, cook sliced onions in butter and oil over medium-low heat for 20-25 minutes until caramelized and sweet. Remove and set aside.
Form the beef into 4 oval patties (matching the shape of the rye bread) and season. Cook in the skillet for 3 minutes per side. Remove patties.
Butter one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices butter-side down in the skillet.
Layer: 1 slice Swiss cheese, 1 cooked patty, caramelized onions, 1 slice Swiss cheese, and top bread (butter-side up).
Cook over medium heat until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, flipping once (about 3-4 minutes per side).
Chef's Tips
Use a heavy press or a smaller pan on top of the sandwiches while cooking to ensure even browning.
Caramelizing the onions properly is key; don't rush them.
